PET material safety assessment: heat resistance and durability of electronic cigarette device shell

The Endura V vape device uses polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as the shell material. The performance of this material in terms of heat resistance and durability is crucial to the safety and service life of the equipment.

Heat resistance assessment

The heat resistance of pure PET is not outstanding. Its heat distortion temperature is only about 85℃, which means that when approaching this temperature, the PET material may deform. However, after the reinforcement treatment, its heat resistance performance will be significantly improved. In some reinforced and modified PET materials, the heat distortion temperature can reach 225℃ or even higher.

For vape devices, during use, situations such as internal battery heating and heat generation from the atomizer may cause the casing temperature to rise. Ordinary pure PET material may not be able to withstand high-temperature environments for a long time, but PET material that has been reinforced can effectively cope. For instance, under normal usage conditions, even if a certain amount of heat is generated inside the equipment, the reinforced PET casing can maintain stable physical properties and will not easily deform or release harmful substances, ensuring the normal operation of the equipment and the safety of the user.

However, if it is used for a long time in a high-temperature environment or abnormal heating occurs, the heat resistance limit of PET material still needs to be paid attention to. Although the heat resistance of the enhanced PET has improved, there is still a risk of performance degradation once the temperature it can withstand is exceeded.

Durability assessment

PET material has excellent mechanical properties. Its impact strength is 3 to 5 times that of other films, and it has good folding endurance. This ensures that even if the vape device is subjected to a certain degree of collision or compression during daily use, its casing is not prone to cracking or damage. For instance, if it accidentally drops during carrying, the PET material casing can absorb part of the impact force, reducing the possibility of damage to the internal components of the device.

PET material also has excellent chemical resistance, being resistant to oil, fat, dilute acids, dilute alkalis and most solvents. For vape devices, this means that their casings are not easily corroded by chemical substances such as e-liquid. The chemical components contained in the e-liquid will not cause significant erosion to the PET casing, ensuring the integrity and appearance quality of the casing and extending the service life of the equipment.

In addition, PET material has a low gas and water vapor permeability rate and excellent gas, water, oil and odor barrier properties. This feature can prevent external moisture, oxygen and other substances from entering the interior of the equipment, avoid damage to internal components due to moisture and other reasons, and further enhance the durability of the equipment.

Overall, after appropriate reinforcement treatment, PET material can provide reliable guarantees in terms of heat resistance and durability when applied to the outer casing of electronic cigarette devices. However, during the usage process, it is still necessary to avoid extreme high-temperature environments to ensure the safety and long-term use of the equipment.
